They can be in plain text or in html.

I don't know why the åäö looks weird (Ã¥) but that's how
metapad shows it. I've tried watching it as Unicode and both
dos and unix file but it's still the same.

If you don't want to parse gaim format (look at their
website for more exact specifications) At least consider
exporting to a well defined XML file. So it's easy getting
the time, date, userID, Alias, textmessage and formating if
there is any.
