Caused by badly behaved browsers, especially IE. Firefox had to follow IE down that road, but at least only try to find a favicon once per site in a session. You can fix it by creating either a proper favicon at the root of your website, or by creating an empty file there. I'm sure there are also ways of making your webserver not log 404 errors for favicon.ico.
