Sounds like your close.  If you have much more difficulty going
down this path, you might want to consider using the SuSe source RPM
and adding the MPLS patch, much like I do with the Fedora RPMs.

Take a look at the man page for 'mkinitrd'.  The initrd must be made by
pointing it at the modules for the same kernel version as the bzimage.
(the initrd contain kernel modules, and as you know kernel modules only
 work with the kernel they were compiled against)
