I think that might be your problem.  You need quagga-mpls not quagga-ldp.
(you are correct in getting ldp-portable as well).
quagga-ldp was a proof concept tree, it it not longer being developed.
quagga-mpls has more functionality anyway (it just doesn't work yet, that
is all :-)
