MPLS over ATM use AAL5NULL encapulation. The (empty) shim is placed right after the AAL5 header. The vpi/vci or just vci are the label valued used for label switching. It is poosible to use more then one label (stacking) by placing more generic labels after the empty shim. (ie there is always one empty label= value at the top of the label stack found in an AAL5 frame ... same hold= s true for frame relay).
