Yes you will need to compile the kernel.  You do not need
to do a 'make modules'  but you do need to install the kernel once it's
compiled.

If you plan to do lots of modification of the kernel, I suggest looking i=
nto
user-mode-linux (http://sf.net/projects/user-mode-linux/)
