[mpls-linux-general] Why does it need to MPLS patch for linux..?

I have a basic question.
 
In order to network in MPLS environment using Linux, 
why should I patch the linux kernel for MPLS networking?
 
In original linux kernel, why cannot network in MPLS environment?
 
Does not MPLS enabled router process all MPLS processing about networking?
 
For the MPLS network, what does linux kernel do?
