Since the work on mplayer is currently being
restuctured - maybe the developers of mplayerxp could
approch and discuss the merging of the xtra-
performance patch onto mplayer?

I mean - mplayerxp ROCKS! And since Arpi who
prevented the merge has left - maybe the merge is a
possibility?

First - the best place for such discussions is mplayer-dev-eng
mailing list.
Second - I'm not sure! Many mplayer's developers were against of
threads so probably it's impossible.
Even more - threads are not only feature of mplayerxp!
It uses perfectly different PTS-based technique of A-V sync.
There were implemented many improvements in demuxer
libvo and other stuffs. So it's really not a simplest job
