Hi I find that mplayerplug-in 1.0pre2 plays all the animations linked on http://chandra.harvard.edu/photo/2004/rxj1242/animations.html embedded in the current browser window (mozilla 1.6, fedora core 1) fine. With mplayerplug-in 2.40 I find that: 1) The mpegs all appear in a new window rather than embeded in the current browser window. 2) Except for the smallest one (Comparison of X-ray to Optical Data of RX J1242-11; low res) all the qt format animations stall after downloading some megabytes, having never started to play the movie. I found that adding to /etc/mplayerplug-in.conf cachesize=65535 cache-percent=100 as someone else reported on this list fixed the stalling problem. However the qts then appear in a new window, just like the mpegs. Can anyone confirm these issues please? Are either of these behaviours expected? I'm not sure whether they might be bugs in mplayerplug-in or in the way the site serves up the movies. Thanks for mplayerplug-in. Roderick Johnstone |

Roderick, 1. I made this design decision to have videos that were not surrounded by an "EMBED" tag to appear in there own window. This allows for proper scaling of the image and better display quality 2. I am seeing some type of problem with this as well. I will look at it today and see if I can correct the problem. Roderick, Ok, I have found why the QuickTime videos fails... When the file is 25% downloaded mplayer is called on the partially downloaded file. Problem is that mplayer gives this error upon loading the partial file. READ: MOV: missing header (moov/cmov) chunk! Maybe broken file... So the quicktime file is not properly encoded for streaming. Usually is is caused by an older encoder. So to play those files your option is to set cache-percent=100. Newer encoders don't have this problem that is why sites like apple.com/trailers work fine. Roderick, I believe in 1.0pre2 the entire file was downloaded and then played. Hi Kevin, Love the new version! (I am using the latest CVS) I was trying to track down some random crashes, and ran mozilla with mplayer-plugin under valgrind. I got the attached suspicious output when I quit mozilla when the movie was still playing. As you will see, the player thread is still alive and it is trying to access local_td->instance->control even after it has been freed. Let me know if there is some more data I can collect. Rodrick, Hey, I found a solution to this problem... I'm going to commit it to CVS here in a few minutes... Basically it is a quick hack. If the error is detected then I tell the player thread to sleep until the file is downloaded. And Wake up when it is done, and try the file again. Works pretty well.. Now I have to monkey test it. Kevin Wow! Many thanks for this fix. I'm happy to be the monkey testing it but I can't until I'm in work on Monday. Roderick, Well I beat on it abit and found a couple of crash points. I then fixed them. Threads and async gui updates are a little tricky to solve. I did some torture tests to the plugin. Played a streaming audio file and then played a couple of movie trailers at the same time... My DSL line didn't like it too much, but I was not able to crash the browser. So this is looking good. Kevin I noticed that the links referred to here that don't have the EMBED tag and come up in their own window don't generate the player buttons for pause/rewind etc. Is that expected?
