I am also seeing this problem. My setup is: Intel PIII CPU, Fedora Core 1. I am connected via DSL, and I get 166kB/sec from the apple.com site. Also I am using cache=8192. I can play the "large" trailers with mplayer outside mozilla. It also works with mozplugger instead of mplayerplug-in. The problem cannot be different mplayer options. I used the exact same command with mplayer from the command line as what mplayerplug-in uses (as seen with "debug=1"). I think the problem is excess CPU use by mplayerplug-in. To test, I started mozilla from the command line, and suspended it (using ^Z) right after the cache filled. The movie played without hiccups. (That movie http://www.apple.com/trailers/universal/dawnofthedead/dawn_apple_large2.html was one of the ones giving me trouble in normal usage). Do you know what the plugin is trying to do while the movie is playing? I tried strace and could not make sense of the output (lots of activity related to nspr). I also have to say that the output from "top" is inconclusive. I have never seen mozilla-bin use more then 10% of the CPU, and mplayer use more then 50%, but apparently it makes a difference. Please let me know if there is more info I can provide. P.S. I tried compiling the plugin. Did yum install mozilla-devel. But compilation fails while looking for "mozilla-config.h". Do I need to compile mozilla from the srpm? Thanks! Alex Eskin __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Is anyone else seeing the high CPU utilization while downloading? On my development machine I am seeing CPU utilization while downloading of about 1% and when mplayer is playing of about 8%, while the download is still going on in the background. What version of mozilla are you using. I'm using 1.6 and I have heard that the default mozilla-devel with FC1 does not work (v1.2). Maybe you just need an upgrade? I just did some testing on a slower laptop and got the following results. Playing "Ogre" sized Shrek 2 trailer. Machine: 800Mhz IBM Thinkpad T21 RAM: 512MB DISK: 40GB (4200 RPM) OS: Fedora Core 1, with updates from freshrpms and dag Linux Kernel 2.4.22-1.2138 (not newest) Firefox 0.8 mplayerplug-in 2.11 RPM from website mplayer from freshrpms 1.0pre2 something optional codecs CPU utilization while downloading: 2% CPU utilization while playing and downloading: 14% CPU utilization while playing and download complete: 8% Bandwidth to laptop: 800K/sec (video was downloaded in about 1 min) Network card: 3Com 100MB Ethernet PCMCIA card I have a xircom card that when I put it in that laptop the CPU utilization goes way up and bandwidth drops to abotu 200K/sec I guess I need to know some hard facts about your machine to figure out what the problem is. You might try upgrading your software. I found this helps alot. Kevin On Tuesday 17 February 2004 08:54 am, Kevin DeKorte wrote: > Is anyone else seeing the high CPU utilization while downloading? I also took this same machine and disabled DMA on the hard drives and tried it again. Downloading was slower and I had a few minor pauses, but nothing horrible.
