Thread: [Motion-user] Multiple USB cameras on one computer?

I remember reading that I can only use one USB camera per computer
with motion.  Is that right?  Was it one per USB controller maybe?

It is one camera per one USB1.1-controller, you can have more cameras on
USB2.0, if I remember correctly :)

It seems that for multiple USB cameras on a 2.0 controller to work,
the cameras must also be 2.0.

Got it, thanks guys.  Is an ethernet extender the best way to get past
the 15 foot USB limit?  Does it work well with motion?

I have seen people take USB to RJ45 and extend USB over ethernet. Your
mileage (or yardage) will vary, of course - from cable to cable to
adapters and of course devices as well.

Of course, if you're just doing $^1T off the Internet that people
suggest, try this one first so you can learn your lesson about 'at

Grant,
3 of my cameras use the extenders. I don't have to much trouble, but
once in awhile I loose the feed and have to restart motion.

How many USB controllers do you have?  Are your cameras USB 2.0?

Good Afternoon,
I had a total of 4 USB cameras. I added 2 PCI cards and had 2 per card.
I am not sure. They were cheapies I got off of e-bay for a couple of
dollars. 
At the moment I am not doing much. I broke it. Need to fix it and get
things working again. I had it e-mailing, ftp'ing. It was working great.

Thanks Ron.  If you have more than one camera per controller, the
cameras and controllers must be 2.0.
