May be a bit off topic, so my apologies, but I figure I'm using motion
and someone out there may have a similar setup..
I've never had much luck going above 4 cameras on my homebrew DVR
running motion, and now that we NEED all 8 ports on the DVR, the box has
been crashing again. With 5 cameras crashes were sporadic, with 4
cameras the DVR will go for months, no problem. Resolution I would
capture at was originally 720x480, then I moved to 640x480, now with 8
cameras I've dropped it down to 352x240 (I'm NTSC and not sure if this
is a 'proper' resolution).
We were at 640x480 when I added 4 more cameras to bring the total to 8,
machine crashed within a couple of hours. Hard crash, nothing responds,
the last log entry is..
motion.3.2.12: sync error in proc 10465:
Now I'm down to 352x240 and machine seems to be better, a few days of
good operation should confirm this. Computer is an atom 330, card is a
PCI kodicom clone 8 chip/port BT878, frame rate is 10 fps. My question
is.. anyone else have a similar card with so many cameras? If so, how
stable is your setup? I have a suspicion that the PCI bus is being
overloaded. I'm no video expert but I read about 18MB/s for full rate
video at D1 resolution. If so, 5 or 6 cameras and I'm pretty close to
the PCI bandwidth of 133MB/s. Could this be the cause? Any other advice?
Things I've tried so far include.. v4l2 on and off, no raid/raid1,
gdbuffers, pci latency, bttv pci bug modprobe options, disabling as many
irq as possible (no usb, etc..), new os install, completely different
hardware, another capture card... nothing seems to stabilize the machine
when many cameras on online.
