Motion when compiled from source will chech if ffmpeg development headers and library is installed. What is cannot know is if the version of ffmpeg (ffmpeg has not yet found out why you need to make formal releases so people have a known baseline) is compatible with Motion. This especially becomes critical with motion rpms which much be installed with a compatible version of ffmpeg. If ffmpeg is installed as binary package it will often have many dependencies.
