I do like the automatic icon sorting and placement. But
there are people that do not appreciate it, and
explaining why, someone come out with a good point: it
might be difficult to find the EXEs if the dir is full
of files, while the user can place them in a good way.
I don't think this should be left to the user. I would
suggest to order not by simple alphabetical order, but
sorting executables first and then the rest (maybe with
a priority for text files, so that docs follows the
executables) in the usual alphabetical order.

    Better would be to clone OS3's behaviour or introduce another column in list mode where the MIME type is listed to let the sorting be done by that field.

    sorting by filetype for sure makes sense, but might be a bit tricky to implement (the filetype scan is happening threaded, so when the window/view opens ambient doesn't know the types yet and hence its not possible to sort by type). This goes for the icon mode.

    In list mode you already can sort by filetype (see treteimers comment), of course it only can sort by type of the already scanned files.
