The background is simply displayed using:
xsetbg -fullscreen /morphix/background.png
As far as I know attempting to use an image that doesn't work doesn't do
any harm. Maybe you modified something else in the process?

The morphix cdrom is automatically mounted at /cdrom (or /media/cdrom,
in the latest autobuilds). It should also be mountable via your
/etc/fstab configuration, adding a repository with apt-cdrom you have to
use the -d option to point to /cdrom depending on if this is the case.
You could also use the file-uri in your sources.list to point to the
directory on your cdrom with your package repository ('deb
file:/cdrom/debian stable main').
