I had a old ppa in /etc/apt/source.list replaced it with /etc/apt/source.list.d/moosefs.list with an explicit version number and followed all the instructions 2.0.77 -> 2.089 [brought up servers] -> shutdown and backup again -> 3.0.77 Everything went very smoothly.
