I don't remember where I found the documentation, but I know I did. (man page maybe...) From what I remember, "rack awareness" directs reads to the servers in the same rack/group as the client but still distributes writes/chunks "randomly". I was /hoping/ that it would distribute chunks according to rack/group, and maybe become a mechanism to distribute data to multiple sites, but I too was disappointed. Still, it is a valuable feature and maybe it will be extended sometime later.
