You can hot-add a chunkserver. Configure the box, start the service,
master will see it automatically, that's it. Space and I/O load balance
will be taken care of :)

I'm afraid I don't understand clearly the question. If you're talking
about virtual machines, I'd say:
One (real) box, one chunkserver. use disks as JBOD for data.
