Hi, it's a good question! Recently I'm planning to create a low cost cluster with MooseFs. I would like to save energy using special hardware for chunk servers. Within a short time I will test 2.5" HDs in some hackable NAS boxes for this purpose. According to my idea, I can install mfs chunk server on NAS in a minimal Linux environment. For metalogger and master servers I'm thinking about to use SSD drives, however they are quite expensive, but fast and the power consumption is very low. So, on the whole, I prefer the lower operational costs than lower procurement cost.
