#19 Many possible Importing improvements

Mad Kan

* Allowing a Header Row option for importing and
exporting CSV files, header row being the

first row - this makes it much easier reading, mapping
and trouble shooting; csv files that are

generated by online banking facilities also may or may
not generate header rows and it is

rarely in the users' control.
* Allow option of having withdrawal and deposit fields
in one or two columns. Some downloads

provide them in the format in your export file
structure, allowing one column for the amount

while another indicates the type (ie
withdrawal/deposit/transfer). Others output in 2 columns;

one for withdrawal and another for deposit, hence no
need for indication of withdrawal or

deposit, this being inferred by the amount in the
appropriate column. Suggest you
* allow an option either at mapping time or in
preference to take care of these variations
* allow an option either at mapping or in preference to
allow the correct treatment of use of

negative signs for withdrawals - some will use the
negative signs while others do not.
* It appears the utility expects certain fields to be
populated or it will bomb out. Instead of

letting it bomb out, alert the users to the missing
field, which ones are missing and

automatically fill is with a default (eg the words
'Payee', 'Category' and 'Sub-Category' for

any of these missing fields can be inserted by the
import utility if they are empty. The

defaults to be used can also be keyed in by users at
mapping time.
* Consider allowing the utility to ask the users when
it detects a new Category or a new

Sub-category, if the users would like this new item
added to the appropriate list.
* Importing process is quite slow for about 100 records
( I had 99). It took a while before it

completed the import - considering showing some
progress bar

i think it would be usefull, if you add a feature to the
reports witch shows the current month ( or maybe the
current, and the next one ) and shows the actual balance (
and withdraws, and deposits ) on each day, os you can see
how many money do you have for example next week sunday.

    Thank you!

yes, I went to test this with my banks online export to csv funtion. I had no control over the format, but it did have a header row:
    Account,Posting Date,Amount,Category Number,Category Name,Reference Number,Memo,Description,Code,Identifier,Location

So maybe you can add that feature skipping the columns you don't recognise or maybe don't need? Maybe allowing for the user to correct for unrecognised column headers?
