I plan on it, but I was hoping to get existing kinks worked out prior to 
upgrading but I may not have a choice.

I agree that it should not be configuration related.  Since you've now
got your configuration imported into monarch, it really should be
trivial to upgrade nagios.  Have you thought about moving to nagios
2.6?  They've fixed a ton of bugs.
