This issue has been confirmed on Mac OS X 10.5.2 and 10.4.11, it may exist on other versions of Mac OS X as well. Despite how the archive is made (via Mac OS X's builtin facilities or through Stuffit) the archive fails to extract via Mac OS X's builtin facilities once downloaded from sourceforge, the archive does not have this issue before being uploaded to sourceforge.
TEMPORARY WORKAROUND
---------------------
Workaround #1: Extract using Stuffit DropStuff
Workaround #2: Extract using the following command in Terminal (HD>Applications>Utilities): "unzip desktop/Moire4.0.1.binary.zip". Executing that command will result in the archive's contents being extracted to the directory you are currently in (this will be your home folder unless you cd elsewhere before executing the unzip command).... read more
Moire X 4 requires Mac OS X 10.4 and up, the binary does not properly function on any older version of Mac OS X and the code fails to compile on older versions of Mac OS X. I do not have the resources to fix the code so that it compiles on operating systems older then Mac OS X 10.4 but welcome any patches that will allow such to be done.
Moire X v4.0.1 is a worthwhile update, it removes debug logging that was accidentally left enabled in version 4.0
Fear not, Moire X is not dead. In fact, the biggest update to the Moire X project has just arrived! For all the details of the new release go here: https://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=588788&group_id=151203 and of course, enjoy! :)
This release contains all the features and bugfixes of Moire X v2.0.1, v2.0, and v1.0 and also contains the following new features:
1) Shape path randomized
2) Shape starts at different locations
3) Size reduced
Both of which at least to me, I feel are an important part of the Moire screensaver and thus justify upgrading to this release (referring to the changes made to how the shapes animate)
Moire X has recently been approved by John Lim, the creator of the original Moire, for those of you who'd like to have this confirmed here's the email:
Hi John Musbach,
As the original author of Moire screensaver for the
Mac, I am extremely pleased that there are still
people who are keen on continuing the development of
Moire. Due to my own carelessness, I lost the original
source code many years ago, so I am even more grateful
to the team members of MoireX for recreating Moire
from scratch.... read more
This release contains a bugfix which fixes the following bug:
This bug is known to affect users of 10.3.9 and may affect users of lower versions of Mac OS X as well. When a user clicked Options to open the screensavers preferences nothing would happen except the preview of the screensaver would freeze until the Preview button was pressed. In addition the following entry could be found in the Console:... read more
I would like to credit John Lim who created the original Moire screensaver, many thanks go to him as without him and his original Moire screensaver there would be no Moire X. Thanks!

Softpedia upon reviewing Moire X has given the program a "100% Clean Award" for being completely clean of any malware, you can view the award here: http://mac.softpedia.com/progClean/Moire-X-Clean-10983.html
The Moire X binary and source code can now be freely downloaded here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=151203 - enjoy!
You can now view screenshots of Moire X here: http://sourceforge.net/project/screenshots.php?group_id=151203
Alright, the screensaver is finally finished and it looks great, will be uploading screenshots now and will also upload a binary and the source code
Still working on the dragging effect, will be adding more shapes and will add an option for showing a clock as done in the original
Still working on the dragging effect as it isn't working right as of yet, should be worked out by tomorrow
Critical bug as previously mentioned here: http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=508463 fixed, working on the other features as also mentioned in that news posting
Moved the option for random shapes into the shape dropdown list so it is optional and separate from the random motion option, now will work on delayed erase, in addition a critical bug has unfortunately been found with this internal release of the screensaver which crashes the System Preferences, this bug will also be worked on and fixed
Started to successfully get random motion changes and shape changes to work with the option to chose the interval of shape changes and to turn the randomization on/off
The screensaver is now being redone since it turns out it wasn't really acting or looking like the original at all
More shapes have been added and color cycling has been included into the screensaver, working on more shapes and the rest of the screensaver preferences (lines, speed, etc)
This news article contains the incremental development progress updates for dates before today since this sourceforge project was just approved today (10-26-05)

---------------
Real rough version of screensaver created. Only implemented the rectangle shape and had no resemblance whatsoever to the original. A problem was found with the code that was preventing the right look from being achieved, this was later on fixed.... read more
More time is being spent working on getting the options window and persistent preferences working correctly. In addition time is now being spent implementing support for cycling colors while shapes animate. :-)
Moire X is still being developed at this time. However it should really take no more then a week or two at most if that. I hope you'll check back within that time as this screensaver is great and I'm sure you'll enjoy it. :-) I'll also try to keep updates as to how the development is going via this news section as much as possible.
Current Status
-----------------------
Screen saver graphics have been programmed and the preferences are now being created (e.g. shape, lines, etc...). There shouldn't be much more left to do after the preferences have been finished up. :-)
