I think I agree with you. I am not saying it is wrong, I just don't like it. =) The qForms examples at pengoworks.com didn't work for me. Admittedly I am using a browser (Galeon) that isn't at the top of the "we need to make sure our app works on these browsers" list. Maybe it is possible to have a good user experience without client side validation. I am not advocating one way or the other (despite my personal preference), I just want to consider all the possibilities.
