Might I recommend to all modules-interested folks the nice software from
MPKG
at
http://staff.e.kth.se/mpkg/
We are using it in-house here to set up ports of (at last count) 178 packages,
among which I see automake and libtool.
MPKG is a generic ports package -- it handles the compilation of software on
multiple platforms. Each package is modularized and the modulefiles are
automatically generated.
