Word too long

Hi

How many characters can a env. variable contain in tcsh ?

We have many tools in our ASIC design flow and designers
very often  gets this " Word too long" problem.   I tried using
"wrapper-scripts" instead of setting the PATH, but it's not
feasible to create and maintain a couple of hundred  wrappers.

Someone solved this problem ?
Is there a shell that does support "bigger" variable  sizes.
