[Module::Build] how about shared data

Sory to bother you again, but what happens if I need to install stuff
into "/usr/share/$program_name" ? I know perl has no config value for
this but it seems rather essential for packages that contain a complete
program.

Have you read the section "How Installation Paths are Determined" in the 
Module::Build manpage? Be aware that not all platforms have a 
'/usr/share/' directory structure to install into.

I read the man page and I'm also aware of the portability issues. I need
a place to install data files and this should default to "share" on unix
systems. I now added "share", "etc" and "docs" install paths to an
overloaded version of Module::Build. I don't really like this sollution
because I needed to modify M:B's internal data and consider it an ugly
way to do it (also no sure what happens with other versions of M:B). But
at least the user can modify them with a argument to Build.PL .

The real issue is that Config.pm doesn't support these kind of
installpaths, but I think it would be nice for Module::Build to supply
them, this could also solve part of the portability issues.

Maybe I missed the point of your original message. Is this _package_ a 
perl module or a perl application? If the latter, then you should not be 
using any of the values that Module::Build provides to select an 
installation point. On my debian system, perl is in '/usr/bin/perl', but 
the FHS says application should NOT install in '/usr/' which is what 
M::B will do. M::B does not have any support for installing applications 
(yet?).

I know I shouldn't but for now I'm doing it anyway till an alternative
comes around.

Well all it takes is just adding a set of default paths, i suggest using
$build->{properties}{install_sets}{application} (please do include etc-,
$share-, and doc-dirs). Of course these defaults should be OS dependent.
