    Josh Powers - 2012-05-07

I'm trying to change my SNR margin target on my DGN3500 since my DSL line has
been pretty unstable lately, but I'm getting the same problem I see some other
people having where the modfs web interface at 192.168.1.1:8081 won't load.
(192.168.1.1 is my router's IP since I changed it, but I've tried changing
back and using 192.168.0.1 too but no luck).

I've tried formatting it to FAT32 and using the modded firmware, and using
other versions of the modfs image/startkit, etc., but for some reason the page
still won't load even after saying modfs was installed.

Is there a way to change the SNR target on DGN3500 manually while I try to get
this fixed, by telnet or something? It would be fine even if it doesn't stay
with a router reboot, just wanting to get my line more stable ASAP.

When I log in using telnet I just see BusyBox commands, which I don't think
will let me change SNR (I admit I don't know much about it, so maybe I'm
    wrong).

Thanks in advance for any help.

Is there anything else I can try?

It says "Modfs already running" the second time I try to start it if that
helps. Then it tries to load 192.168.1.1:8081 again but I get the same error.

I've tried formatting to FAT32 already a few times, and I'm making sure I'm
using the correct version for everything.

I feel like I've tried everything at this point. :( My line keeps
disconnecting because of low SNR though, and this is the only modem/router I
have right now, so trying not to give up on this yet.

Thanks in advance for any reply.

Sorry (not sure if I can edit posts) but I forgot to mention that I'm using
.28 NA firmware, and using modfs_DGN3500_startkit_0.1 and
    modfs_image-0.2_beta.

Did this ever get sorted for you by any chance?

I recently started using the DGN3500 and have been trying to get wake on lan
    to work remotely.

I've got the exact same problem and have spent the last several hours trying
to figure it out without any luck.

Modf seems to be loading but the web page doesn't work.

I found your post through a google search and am about to troll through the
website to see if I can find a solution.

    Cheers,
    Mike

I've spent hours on it and am happy to say I found a solution - use a USB3
    memory stick.

During one of the numerous mod_image changes, I noticed the USB port on the
Netgear is blue and so I tried my USB3 stick and finally the page loaded.

Summary of the steps I took -

    • Flashed modem with DGN3500_16M-V1.1.00.33_MODFS

    • Full format (in Windows) a USB3 stick to FAT32. (NOT a quick format)

    • Copied mod_image.bin from modfs_image-build244.zip onto USB3 stick (in Windows)

    • Safely removed USB3 from Windows (no idea if this did anything, I wasn't taking any chances)

    • Turned modem off - plugged in USB3 stick - turned modem on

Looks like I may have spoken too soon. It worked until I rebooted the Netgear
and then it was back to the same problem.

Turns out the modem doesn't have a USB3 port (I don't know why they made it
blue) but it is fussy on what USB drives it can use.

I'm off to the shops today to see if I can find one on the approved list.

I found the instructions on how to install modfs on a Netgear DGN3500 and
tried to post them here but the website thinks I\'m trying to spam. I\'ll
include the link to the instructions below however they are in Italian (Google
translator makes a really good translation).

    http://www.hwupgrade.it/forum/showthread.php?t=2297494

The step I missed (and potentially a lot of others) was that with the modified
firmware you have to run modfs_installer.cgi once to kick off the automatic
    loading process.

    Abbreviated instructions (from developer)

To use modfs with modified firmware:

    1. Download a modified firmware in the download section below
    2. Download the version of modfs present in the download section below
    3. Download modfs_installer.zip present in the download section below
    4. Install the modified firmware (eg DGN3500 V1.1.00.33_WW_MODFS) through the normal procedure using the web interface of the router.
Warning: During the upgrade, leave the router blinking until it restarts by
    itself!
    5. Extract and copy the file on the USB memory mod_image.bin in this zip modfs
    6. Extract and copy the files in USB memory modfs_installer.zip
    7. Run (only once), http://192.168.0.1/shares/U/modfs_installer.cgi to enable automatic booting. Only has to be run first time you use it.
    8. Reboot the router: modfs start automatically (about twenty seconds after the lights are lit on the router you can access the web).

Even if reboot the router without the USB stick inserted when you insert modfs
    start automatically.
If you perform a reset to factory settings run http://192.168.0.1/shares/U/mo
    dfs_installer.cgi
    to re-
    enable automatic booting

Install and start modfs DGN3500 with the original firmware
    1. Download \\"modfs_DGN3500_startkit.zip\\" along with the release of modfs (\\"modfs_image\\") from the Modfs facebook page.
    2. Unzip \\"modfs_DGN3500_startkit.zip\\" on a disk / USB drive (formatted as FAT32)
    3. Copy the binary file on the same disk \\"mod_image.bin\\" Release modfs
    4. Insert the disk into the USB port on the back of DGN3500
    5. Start at modfs: Web browser enter the url in the address bar: http://192.168.0.1/shares/U/modfs_boot.cgi
Where 192.168.0.1 is the IP address of the router and where U is the drive
letter that the firmware of the router has assigned automatically to the usb
    disk.
The firmware of the drive letter assigned DGN3500 following sequence: U, T, S,
    etc ...)
If you have a USB hub connected to DGN3500 with several hard disks connected, verify that the letter was assigned to the drive where files are modfs
    6. Wait about 10 seconds you should be automatically redirected to the login page of the web modfs
    User: admin
    Password: admin

Do not remove the USB drive from the USB port DGN3500 up shutting down the
router, otherwise it will crash modfs and probably also the firmware of the
router! If you want to remove modfs from the router, just restart the router.

To start modfs every time you turn on or restart the router, you must repeat
    steps 4, 5 and 6.

To access the modfs (if already started) to enter the web browser the url:
    http://192.168.0.1:8081

    Hallo,
The procedure "Install and start modfs DGN3500 with the original firmware"
works fine but the start of modfs is not comfortable.
I want to switch on/off my DNG3500B and the modfs should start the miniDLNA
without starting windows with browser input http://192.168.0.1/shares/U/modf
    s_boot.cgi
    according the
procedure "Install and start modfs DGN3500 with the original firmware".

The solution could be the procedure "To use modfs with modified firmware".
But it does not work. After Point 4 (Install the modified firmware (eg DGN3500
V1.1.00.33_WW_MODFS) through the normal procedure using the web interface of
the router.) comes the message that the file for firmware update file does not
    match with the Router.

Could it be that the img file works only with the DGN3500 and not with the
DGN3500B. My firmware is V1.1.00.28_1.00.28GR - that is the result from
    automatically update via Internet.
    What can I do?
Is there anyhere a modified firmware with modfs for DGN3500B (Annex B is
    necessary for Germany)?

    Thanks
