The Sony DCR-IP7 is a new camcorder which
generates MPEG-2 TP video on "micro mv"
cassettes. It has a IEEE 1394 interface, but does
not support Macintosh because the data it moves
is not DV-video.

It strikes me that this conversion tool would be very
helpful in making this amazing little camera work.
I'm not sure the difference between transport (TP)
MPEG-2 video and the kind you find on a DVD -
would this be a difficult feature to add?

Obviously, the next step would be to produce a
1394 interface for the camera, but that's probably
best left up to Sony.

Thoughts?

Once you have the mpeg data in a file on your computer it'd be fairly easy to modify MM2D to be able to parse that file.

The problem is importing the file from the camera, this is beyond the mm2d app.

Once you can get the data, then mm2d can be modified to handle it, but I don't see us reverse engineering the cameras firewire protocol and implementing a filesystem for it :)

True - I agree that camera control is beyond MM2D's scope.
But given that consumer electronics makers are getting
behind the standard, I think that MPEG2 TP is likely to
become more common. It would be great to have it in MM2D,
even if in the short term you need to bridge the MMV data
    over from a PC.
