When you are using mlterm with TERM=xterm, there can be some gliches depending on your system's terminfo/termcap data. I'd like to recommend to use mlterm with TERM=mlterm if you want to utilize a bit advanced feature of the terminal emulator. Please try to invoke mlterm as mlterm -y mlterm and run vim on it.
