Sorry for not having done anything to debug the problem.

In recent versions of X (at least XFree86 3.x/4.x), there are
such information in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/*/Compose. Would
there be any X call to get at this information?

I suppose xterm uses hard-coded tables to accomodate old
versions of X?
