Hello.
Can anyone, please, walk a newbie through installing Mixmaster on Mac OS
X?
I'm trying to build Mixmaster 3.0 on an Apple computer running Mac OS X
10.8.4 (Snow Leopard). I have unpacked the tarball and launched the
compiler ('./Install' in Terminal).
Unfortunately, the compilation stops after a couple of dialogues with
this message:
'Looking for libz.a...
Not found.'
Having read the README, I think libz.a is a part of the zlib software
library and is a vital component that must be installed before trying
Mixmaster. But zlib is already installed on my machine because it comes
standard with Mac OS X. At least the operating system has a man page for
it. Then why does my installation abort?
In general, is Mixmaster compatible with Mac OS X?
Regards,
Sylvia

I have Mixmaster 3.0.2 installed on a Windows OS and it works just fine. There is, however, one issue that I would like to see about resolving. My question is relevant to Mixmaster installed on Linux too, and I have both configurations. The thing I would like to fix relates to the kind of connections it is able to make. I can get it configured to connect directly to stunnel and then to socat and then to tor, whenever it is posting email or news to the remailer network. But I have not been able to make it use any kind of encrypted connection when it updates stats or the alpingers file, and I have not gotten it to use wget directly for updating these stats. I can download stats with it but only on port 80 and not through an encrypted connection, at least none that I have found. Also, in reading one of the guides, and there are a few of them floating around, I am led to believe that wget could be used in the configuration file like so: wget When I tried this, nothing happened with wget. I am under the impression, based on my experience in other cases, that I could actually make wget utilize an encrypted connection if I could get it to work with Mixmaster. I do use wget in this way without Mixmaster. If anyone has more information about either of these procedures, I would appreciate hearing about it or getting some pointers from you. Thanks. |

1. I sent a test message to myself (via mixmaster) recently.
The next day, the message arrived with this header:
Fritz Wuehler
<fr...@sp...>
I was shocked because I thought, "My messages are being treated as spam".
After some research, I discovered this table:
Default From: Headers
The default From headers of all remailers when sending e-mail. Middleman
remailers are not listed here.

Hi, What is the correct procedure for changing Mixmaster keys on a remailer? And making sure the old one still works? The FAQ section on this is empty... Cheers, Sean |

Unfortunatly it seems that somethig is filtering out port
25, so you are out of luck sending any mail from your
pc, not only from mixmaster.
It is not a mixmaster or postfix-related issue;
probably your provider is filtering it (or maybe
your local router, if any)
Normally this kind of provider allow to connect at only one
server at port 25, i.e. the provider's own SMTP
If this is your case try to telnet to it, and if this works,
use it as a relayhost for your postfix.

Tried again after running mixmaster-update, still no luck. I forgot to say
Postfix was installed automatically too when I installed mixmaster, I did no
tweaking there either. The mail doen't go to junkmail. What are the
chances Gmail or the ISP trashes the mail? Does this software actually work
for anybody?
Also I found this in /var/mail/user:
This is the mail system at host [hostname]
I'm sorry to have to inform you that your message could not
be delivered to one or more recipients. It's attached below.
For further assistance, please send mail to postmaster.
If you do so, please include this problem report. You can
delete your own text from the attached returned message.
The mail system
<rem...@kr...>: connect to
rooty.uni-boeblingen.de[212.95.32.155]:25: Connection timed out
The attached delivery report reads as follows:
Final-Recipient: rfc822; rem...@kr...
Action: failed
Status: 4.4.1
Diagnostic-Code: X-Postfix; connect to
rooty.uni-boeblingen.de[212.95.32.155]:25: Connection timed out
There are multiple such messages in that mail file.
I have no idea what it means. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

This is just as it installs from the repositories. Is this enough detail? Thanks for the help. G. |

If they are being sent to you, then check the spam folder, either on
your computer or online.
It really depends on any of the receiving ISP's as to whether it gets
delivered.
My experience, last year, was hit or miss as well

Hello! Thank you, William, for your answer. After some hours of experiments, I came to the result that defining the public and secret key from the configuration file simply _does not work_. Maybe it's a bug. But if I start mixmaster from the command line, "overriding" the respective variables (mixmaster --PGPPUBRING=~/.gnupg/pubring.gpg --PGPSECRING=~/.gnupg/secring.gpg), then everything works ok, the encryption is done and the mail is sent. I must say that in the case that there are more than one keys that correspond to the same email address in the public key ring, then mixmaster does not ask which key should be used, and uses automatically the first address (that comes in the list of "gpg --list-keys"). Best Regards Alexandros |

Hello! I have installed mixmaster 3.0 as a client on Linux and I can send mails, yet not encrypted. In my mix.cfg file I have the lines PGPPUBRING /home/myhome/.gnupg/pubring.gpg PGPSECRING /home/myhome/.gnupg/secring.gpg Then I start the mixmaster, I write a message, I press "y" for encryption and after hitting "m" to send it to the pool I get the message: Notice: Key <ema...@do...> not found! I would be grateful for any help. Best Regards Alexandros |

Dear all, [Apologies if you get multiple copies of this email.] Mixmaster 3.0 has been released this week. This is the first major version release since 2.9, and a continuation of that code, though it incorporates numerous improvements, feature enhancements, and bug-fixes. It is recommended that you upgrade your remailers to this version. For those of you running 3.0rc1 or one of the 3.0 beta releases, the changes are minor, though upgrading is still recommended. Please report any problems you experience to the Mixmaster maintainers through the bug tracker at SourceForge. (http://sf.net/projects/mixmaster). The code can be found there as well, and is signed by the Mixmaster 3.x release key, found on http://mixmaster.sf.net and signed by myself and numerous other cypherpunks. Any questions regarding tampering with the source code should be reported as soon as noticed. There are some user-facing improvements as well, though most of the planned client improvements have been pushed off to 3.1. For stability reasons, users of the client are encouraged to upgrade as well. (Users of third-party GUIs for Mixmaster are encouraged to report their success or problems with detailed bug reports if applicable.) We're looking forward to your feedback! Best regards, on behalf of the Mixmaster Development Team: Steve Crook Peter Palfrader Len Sassaman Colin Tuckley |

I've searched through google, and have not come up with a solution.
How to get a universal or intel build of mixmaster. Nor what it would
take to compile under os x.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Looks as if mixmaster breaks attachments up into chunks of about 10KB each and sends each bit to a different chain of remailers. Note that the final step is the same for all of the ones above, since that's presumably where it's reassembled. If I try with a single 4K file, I only see one chain announced. The attempt described in my previous message was a 70K file, thus the (7) chunks. Why none of them are getting through is still a puzzle, though. Steve -- |

This is very frustrating. I have not been able to duplicate this using the same commands you are with Mixmaster 3.0b2. I don't normally use mixmaster on the command line but with Mutt. The only thing that I can think of is the size of your attachment. I'm not positive how mixmaster reacts to attachments but could it be breaking it up into multiple parts. Then perhapse the remailer network is rejecting them because of size. This is just a guess. --=20 B. L. Very strange. I even downloaded and built a backlevel version (2.9.0) - same thing. No matter what I do it sends one copy to every chain (i.e. in the example above it took it upon itself to mail (7) copies of the message. Which would be fine, except none arrive at the destination address - 0% reliability. If I don't attempt to attach anything it works correctly, announcing a single chain and ultimately delivering the message. What version are folks using? This is very frustrating. Steve -- |
