Just want to build upon the issue cmiyachi's previous message indiacted to invite discussions on the economic benefits of open source.

    1. At the individual level: Is open source development apart from one's earing a living, or
is it contributing directly/indirectly to a person's professional work and ultimately leads to an individual's econimic payoff in workplace?

    2. At the organizational level: Is it true that organizations allow their employees to work on open source projects simply because they think that ultimately they can commercialize/license the open source products?  Or there are other non-economic factors that incent organizations to spare their resources?

I would like to pursue this issue, and love to see
    people post their opinions.

    Thanks

    Steven

I have several friends who pursue open source coding in their spare time as a way of developing and honing their programming skills.  I would argue that this leads to their individual economic benefit because they can then translate this programming knowledge into their current work, or by creating new developing skills, allows them to transition into a developer position in their career.
