I am looking to add IR to my mh system for sending commands to mh and also
some AV equipment. I figured if I send the commands to mh then it can act
on them. One of the actions could be to send IR commands to equipment.
What are my choices besides LIRC? LIRC seems like a good choice because the
hardware can be simple. And I think the simple RS232 interfaces can be
paralleled so that I can have more than one receiver on the same port - I
would like multiple receivers eventually.
One question is can LIRC and the simple serial port hardware use the serial
port on a Digi port server? I don't have any standard ports on my current
PC (although I eventually want to more to a low power board that has
several). Should I look at UIRT2 or something similar instead?
I haven't completely ruled out commercially made hardware but want to keep
the cost low. Anything low cost that can use ethernet to relay the info?

I setup lirc on mythtv back before it was all drop and load. You can
configure in the lirc.conf file the port that lirc is to work on. I
had it receiving on the port on my PVR-350 card, and blasting on
/dev/ttyS0 to control my Bell (dishnetwork) receivers. I had a twin
blaster, and could control two receivers simultaneously.
So long as the Digiport server gives you a tty on the PC, I'm pretty
sure lirc can bind to it.
