Are there any low-cost thermostat control alternatives?
I don't consider the little heat-strip to be a realistic
answer, but the X-10 options are around $200 and the RS-485
options are even higher. It seems silly that you can buy
a low-end programmable thermostat for ~$50 and you can buy
a Basic Stamp or just a UART for a few bucks, but you can't
get a prebuilt thermostat with a serial port for less than
So I was kind of hoping somebody had hacking instructions,
something like "go buy this thermostat" and then "do this
set of instructions" and you can control it from your PC.
Or maybe somebody that's smarter than me can tell me
EXACTLY what to do to hook up some of them cool DalSemi
devices to take control of my HVAC?
