Not without some help. I suspect there might be some software out there that would act as a serial server, creating a bridge between a tcpip socket and a serial port. If you could find that, the mh side would be a piece of cake. That's one of the main uses of the $50 Dallas Semi Tini board, although I have not had an application for that yet, so I have not tried it. A bare bones mh, with just a few lines of code, could act as a serial server. But bare bones mh still takes a fair amount of memory, so I can understand your hesitation there.
