Increasing SWAP certainly wouldn't hurt, but perhaps there's some gcc compatibility issue w/ flite (1.2?). Other options might be to look for a pre-built binary since flite by itself is fairly small. Other options are to consider other TTS engines. Festival isn't as fast as flite unless using the client/server mode (since the main speed issue is mostly load time and you just leave the server running continuously and it can run on the same system as the client). I believe that voice compatibility between these 2 are nearly identical. Also, assuming you want to stay the open-source route, you could try FreeTTS. There is no current mh integration, but it wouldn't be too difficult and I would be willing to give you a hand. FreeTTS supposedly supports the FestVOX voices and speed is comparable to Flite. If commercial (i.e., purchased) engines are an option, many of us use cepstral.com's swift or older theta engines. The downside to the latter is that greatest voice selection is US or UK English which could be an issue depending on your need. Gregg |
