Ok, sympathy I can give you. Been there done that. Got the tee shirt.... = er, uh ~25 hours of painful troubleshooting to show for it. After = unknowingly installing the v21, I tried everything I could think of to = cleanly get rid of it. I searched registry entries, tried Norton = uninstall (which usually does a great job of finding everything) but to = no avail. For the windows apps I've written, I usually provide an = install log with the system changes. If they had done that, then we = could figure out how to back the old stuff out. I had been needing to = upgrade the hard drive on my MH machine (for the megs of mpg files I = keep on there) so that gave me a chance to do a clean install of v17, = then v20 (I only went as high as I needed. As I remember, I think there = was something missing in the v17 they added in v20.... maybe the = integrated firecracker setup...). This did work and I was able to get it = to control a TV sitting next to the computer. However, the software = which comes with it still gave me errors and crashes and was miserably = slow. I think it's worst VB app I've ever seen. And the kicker is that = even if you only want to use it for MH, you still have to use X10's = software to set up the equipment codes. When I got back around to = actually setting it up to use permanently after a couple of weeks, the = whole unit just died while I was trying to find the code for a VCR... no = light, no response, nothing. I returned it to gadgethome and they kindly = refunded my money. I'm still looking for a good inexpensive IR solution. = If you get the IR Commander set up and working, it's probably ok but I'd = rather just look for something that's done a little better or maybe even = build something (I thought the CIR looked interesting = http://www.ziplabel.com/cir/moreir.html ) Good luck. Reply-To: mis...@li... I wish I had checked this list before installing Xcom021. After experiencing the problem with IR commander setup not responding with a steady LED, I searched here and found the problem reported and apparent solution of getting version 17. I called X-10 tech support and after waiting 40 minutes on hold, was at first told that they've never heard = of this problem. Then after checking, they admitted that there might be a problem and that version 17 would be better. They isn't mention that I = was already *&^% in having installed version 21. My question to the group is, yes there is a question, I just needed = to rant a little, has anyone figured out how to recover from a premature install of v21 without reloading windoze? After uninstalling v21 and installing v17 the same problem exists. Does anyone know if this happens = on all systems and if so why is X-10 still providing this crap. There must = be a dll or a registry entry that remains from the v21 install that can = removed or fixed. Any help, or even some sympathy, would be appreciated. I've learned = my lesson and will always check with accumulated knowledge of this group = before trying any more X-10 stuff. Thanks, David M. Hans |
