I am a very basic linux user and have a freenas server running. It has UPnP support, but my Sony W5100 says the server is not supported. I have heard good things about miniDLNA and Sony.

Is it possible to install miniDLNA on Freenas and make it work? If yes, then I would really appreciate it if someone could list a step by step approach on doing it. Thanks!

FreeNAS is based on FreeBSD and not Linux so its not so simple to use it.

There are a few libraries that miniDLNA needs that I dont know if they are available on BSD, even if they are the code must be checked if there is any other code specific for Linux…

It should run on BSD, but you need to check out the osx_port branch from CVS.  Eventually this branch will get merged in with the main tree.
