I've been missing RAR archive support in MiniDLNA so far, so I thought of some ways to give MiniDLNA access to files inside RAR archives.
My approach includes minidlna and rarfs (a Fuse module). You can find rarfs on SourceForge.
To compile rarfs (on Ubuntu, don't know about the others) you'll need the following packages:
rarfs allows you to mount uncompressed RAR archives, even split ones, to a folder. After mounting you find the contents of your archive inside that folder. MiniDLNA can stream those files just fine, I've tested it with various high bitrate 1080p material.
The only problem is now, that there is no inotify event when the mounting is done (just for the folder itself, not the file inside the archive). You have to do a rescan to have MiniDLNA notice the new files. If anyone has an idea how to accomplish this, please share it ;)
Needless to say, I hope MiniDLNA will have native RAR archive support someday.
Tested with Ubuntu 11.04 amd64, minidlna 188.8.131.52_cvs433_stedy, rarfs 0.0.10
I've tested some more and I can confirm FF/Rew is possible with rarfs.
Tested on Samsung UE40D6500.
