I was finally able to compile and build my code in mingw. However, while the
same code works fine in linux, but it crashes in win32. Any comments? I
attached the code with this message.

If you are using a big input file then maybe scanf is overflowing your
buffer, and you are also not checking the return value (it would be safer
and quite simple to avoid scanf I think). You have at least a couple of bugs
with allocating a buffer of strlen(x) when it should be strlen(x)+1. It only
works on Linux by chance :-).
