gmp builds out of the box (./configure --target=i686-pc-mingw32) with
cygwn bash and make.
and mingw gcc and binutils toolchains. If you are want to install the
environment, I can provide some advice on how to build,
You only need gmp and mpfr if you are building gfortran.
Precompiled binaries of gfortran for mingw are available. Search the
gfortran mainling lists,

You're right, Sisyphus and Keith Marshall: Renaming the makes wans't a good idea (but with an earlier installation, I thing he told me so. I don't know what was different that time). Now it compiles fine.
