I have solved the problem with the byte swapping when writing out my files.
There was a logic error in a definition file with an ifdef statement that
was apparently ignored with gcc version 2.95.3-6 and was enforced with gcc
version 3.2. I appreciate the help that I got from this list, and my
apologies to those I contacted directly without going through the list
