Hi. I am having trouble setting the acces permissions of directories on my msys installation. Host OS is Vista. I give the following command: $ chmod -vR 777 /usr/local/share/ mode of `/usr/local/share' changed to 0777 (rwxrwxrwx) mode of `/usr/local/share/aclocal' changed to 0777 (rwxrwxrwx) mode of `/usr/local/share/aclocal/gimp-2.0.m4' changed to 0777 (rwxrwxrwx) mode of `/usr/local/share/aclocal/gimp-2.0.m4/tyr' changed to 0777 (rwxrwxrwx) It shows that the permissions have been changed correctly. But they are not shown as changed when I ls the same folder. $ ls -lg /usr/local/share/ total 0 drwxr-xr-x 3 wiseguy Administ 0 Jul 28 17:14 aclocal Is there something funky going on? |

No. Woe32 file system attributes simply don't match the *nix model `ls'=20 expects. You should be able to access the files, as you require; don't=20 place too much faith in the permissions shown by `ls'. Regards, Keith. |

Well, I have been trying to get a working build of GIMP on my Vista going. But the failed results had me suspecting the file permissions. But if, what you say, is the case, then I am not sure whats going on. On the Msys window I give the command "make Install", and I get the following error: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- $ make install Making install in m4macros make[1]: Entering directory `/C/PROjects/gimp/gimp-2.3.18/m4macros' make[2]: Entering directory `/C/PROjects/gimp/gimp-2.3.18/m4macros' make[2]: Nothing to be done for `install-exec-am'. test -z "/usr/local/share/aclocal" || mkdir -p -- "/usr/local/share/aclocal" /bin/install -c -m 644 'gimp-2.0.m4' '/usr/local/share/aclocal/gimp-2.0.m4' /bin/sh: /bin/install: Permission denied make[2]: *** [install-m4dataDATA] Error 126 make[2]: Leaving directory `/C/PROjects/gimp/gimp-2.3.18/m4macros' make[1]: *** [install-am] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/C/PROjects/gimp/gimp-2.3.18/m4macros' make: *** [install-recursive] Error 1 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Any ideas what could be going on? thanks, Sunil PS: I am totally new to the *nix ways. To work around it, go to the following bug report entitled "/bin/install and /bin/install-info fail on Vista": http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1711379&group_id=2435&atid=102435 Go to the "Attached files" section of this page and place the manifest files on the MSYS "bin" directory. still not working ... same error. I kept the downloaded manifests in C:\msys\1.0\bin As well as removed the security settings from Control Panel. Ok. I crossed this problem, by setting the executable at "C:\msys\1.0\bin\install.exe" to run in xp compatibility mode. For being on the safe side, I also did the same with install-info.exe Now I have another problem. Ok.... Success finally.
