Then I think the way to continue debugging this is to put a breakpoint
on 'abort' and try getting a backtrace when (and if) that breaks.

Also, make sure you compile and link with the -g3 switch and do NOT
use the -s switch or any other means of stripping the debug info from
the executable.  Otherwise, the backtrace will be very dull.
