I've noticed that there usually is quite a difference b/t how 'robust' code is when it's built with debugging on or off. In MSVC a lot of code will start working with debugging on when it wouldn't with debugging off. When I recompiled this code in MSVC, I noticed that it did throw an error about all control paths not returning a value... yet it still generated the correct result.
