I was not aware of a "mingwrt-3.18-mingw64.tar.gz" tarball around, where
is it supposed to come from?

If its really mingw-w64, x86_64-pc-mingw64 is not the same as
x86_64-w64-mingw64. The latter is designed to use mingw-w64 specific
features, while the former is setup for compatibility with mingw.org
(which doesn't quite make sense at the moment, since there is not 64bit
support there yet). The latter triplet is encouraged.
