I'm attempting to install MinGW in order to compile a statistical package (R, see www.r-project.org) in Windows. They recommended using MinGW; part of the required tools were the binutils. I think they suggested the binutils-19990818-1-crtdll.zip distribution; I've seen the same bug in binutils-2.10.91-20001103.zip.

The bug is that windres.exe doesn't crashes WinME. It pops up a window saying there's a general protection exception at 0028:0003, and then WinME is left in a mess -- some things work, but it can't reboot itself.

Turned out to be an incompatibility with the Norton Anti-virus software that was running. Turn that off, and windres is fine.
