I would like to request that future MinGW/MSYS releases include in their distribution archives a manifest file containing a list of the contents of said archive (i.e. as from the ouput of a "tar tf") in a common directory such as /manifest (relative to its respective installation path). On occasion I have found it necessary to know which archive contains which file, most often when I FUBAR something. While it's trivial to recurse and list the files from each archive, having the information already on hand would be more convenient.

An example of such can be found within the binary archives for Windows from gtk.org, or the venerable DJGPP distribution files.

I'd also like to say how much I appreciate the work and effort of all of those who keep MinGW & MSYS together. I thank you.

I don't see this happening from our end. An end user can create such a listing just as easily with

    for i in /mingw/var/cache/mingw-get/packages/*.tar.*
    do
    tar atf $i >> manifest.txt
    done

What do the other maintainers think about this?
