The default action is to return src-string. This procedure can be redefined by the application, for example to log error messages for each unknown string. The ::msgcat::mcunknown procedure is invoked at the same stack context as the call to ::msgcat::mc. The return vaue of ::msgcat::mcunknown is used as the return vaue for the call to ::msgcat::mc. - Veronica Loell |

I have put together some msgcat-catalogs with data from the ICU project, it contains names of months, day of the week, languages and countries, this data is automatically extracted directly from the ICU sourcefiles so I don't guarantie its accuracy. There's a simple viewer also for looking at the data. More info and some screenshots can be found at mimersbrunn's homepage at mimersbrunn.sourceforge.net - Veronica Loell |

Dear list, (sorry, I have only requests about the msgcat package which should perhaps be addressed somewhere else (in the wiki, c.l.t., the author) ) the way msgcat (and gnu gettext) does translations causes trouble to me in one point: They are designed to: - Write your application in the default language like: [mc "Name"] - Then translate using message catalogues: mcset fr "Name" "Nom" mcset de "Name" ;# Same as english The trouble I have: Sometimes two identical strings in english are not identical in the translation but my tags are not unique any more. So I use symbolic tags [mc labelUserName] [mc labelFieldName] I also find it clearer programming to separate clearly textes and program. It is also a codepage issue for non iso8859-1 default languages. In addition if I use huge english textes in a greek program, I have huge data to compare and store for nothing. But I want to have a fallback to a default string if I do (partial) translations. This does not work any more. I get the symbolic name as default translation. Wouldn't it possible to define a default fallback language to look up if the default does not have a translation ? Best regards, Harald |

Dear list, I want to know your thoughts how to use msg files with other encodings than iso8859-1. I have done an application for greece with tcl using iso8859-7 as system encoding, running on Windows (english and greek) Linux and sco-unix (4 codepages). I typed anything in an iso-8859-7 editor which is not a problem. Each time a string with greek characters apears I use: [encoding convertfrom iso8859-7 "???"] or I use "\u03a8\u03a9\u03aa" In the message file I use two global functions, se for english entries (in iso-8859-1) and sg for greec entries (in iso-8859-7). I have copied them at the end of this message. Anyway I am not satisfied with the solution. I would prefer to: - Generally type msg strings in UTF-8 and build a mechanism in msgcat that it uses this encoding for the last argument of mcset (As tags I generally use symbolic tags and no printable text which makes programming easier (codepage horror)). - specify the encoding of the mcset command somewhere, the best would be with the language. When language is gr use iso8859-7. When language is en or de or fr use iso8859-1. Or use the system encoding. What do you think ? Best regards, Harald Appendix: Functions sg and se proc sg {args} { upvar l l if {1 == [llength $args]} { eval ::msgcat::mcset $l $args } else { eval ::msgcat::mcset $l [lindex $args 0]\ [encoding convertfrom iso8859-7 [lindex $args 1]] } } proc se {args} { upvar l l eval ::msgcat::mcset $l $args } |

Hello, About the encoding, I would suggest that you use utf-8 for all your message files, msgcat 1.2.2 automatically loads the messagefiles in utf-8 encoding. This version is not yet included in a release, but I would suggest that anyway. If you don't want to upgrade to this version then you can use a couple of lines instead of mcload, something like this: set fd [open [cconcat [file join msgs $Lang] ".msg"] r] fconfigure $fd -encoding utf-8 set utfscript [read $fd] close $fd eval $utfscript As far as standard msgcat files, I don't know where one might find them. Personally I don't really like the idea of "automatic translation" of software or anything else either without it being supervised by a translator, it's better to try to get someone to translate it for you, with the use of msgcat you have separated the translatable strings from the source files in order to enable easier translation. Welcome Kevin, This is definately the place for this kind of discussion among other things, I myself am mostly in the translation corner. This is a very new list, so far we are only 3 people on it, not many but it's a start. - Veronica Loell >Subject: [Mimersbrunn-tcltk] Greetings! > From: ke...@ac... Hi, my name is Kevin Kenny, and most Tcl'ers already have an idea who I am (I've been active in the Tcl/Tk community for over ten years, and I'm on the Tcl Core Team.) I've quite an interest in reworking the [clock] command to adapt better to an international environment. There are a couple of related pieces of work that I've been trying to co-ordinate. (1) An open discussion on rework to the [clock] command: http://purl.org/thecliff/tcl/wiki/ReworkingTheClockCommand (2) A 'calendar' module for 'tcllib' (There isn't much there yet, but I'm working on it, and welcome more hands!): http://tcllib.sourceforge.net/ The problem of translating the strings is only a small part of what I'm trying to accomplish, as the Wiki page at (1) will show. In fact, I've been rather thinking of the translation as more or less a solved problem. The International Components for Unicode project (http://oss.software.ibm.com/) has available for free download a set of C and C++ components that include translations of country names, language names, date/time elements, weekday abbreviations and names, month abbreviations and names, era names (BC = f.Kr., AD = e.Kr.) number elements, currency elements, and time zone names into a large set of languages -- from this set of translations, we should have only to do file format conversions to make the message catalogs. A larger problem is doing a parser from localized times back to the Tcl clock; this problem, I think, will involve a total replacement of [clock scan]. I have a lot of ideas about this and not enough time, if anyone is interested in helping, please get in touch with me! -- 73 de ke9tv/2, Kevin KENNY GE Corporate Research & Development ke...@ac... P. A brief introduction. My main languages are Swedish and English, Swedish being my first language. I've been working with TclTk and msgcat for about a year now. I'm enrolled in a masters degree program for computational linguistics and am generally interested in availability to and ease of use of computer programs. I am a very interested although not very active member in the Free Translation Project, http://www.iro.umontreal.ca/contrib/po/HTML/index.html, and I am working on some open source translations that are not part of the TP, mainly programs for windows which is what I normally use. I work with the msgcat-package in my own projects and have not found any forum for discussion of this, which is one of the reasons why I started this list. Welcome! Veronica Loell min...@us... |
