I am thinking of buying one of these mini-notebooks which has no optical
drive. It does have a USB reader. Can the Miktex installation files be
copied onto a memory stick and run from there? It comes with a 160GB hard

Yesterday I installed MikTeX from an USB stick on my Lenovo T43 without any problems. Besides the installer you need all the packages which can be fetched from CTAN using wget for example. During the installation you will be asked where the installer should look for the packages.
